Anniversary

Mattel's first toy vehicle, the Dream Car, came out around 15 years before Hot Wheels and was made in at least two scales, the most well-known being a 1/24 scale version.

The Hot Wheels casting of the Mattel Dream Mobile was an homage to the original and was released to celebrate Mattel's 75th Anniversary.

Mattel is now celebrating 80 years with a ruby anniversary collection that includes releases for Hot Wheels, Barbie, Monster High, Polly Pocket, Uno, Magic 8 Ball, Thomas & Friends, and Fisher-Price.

Mattel was founded in January 1945 as Mattel Creations by businessman Harold "Matt" Matson and the husband-and-wife duo of Elliot and Ruth Handler. The company initially sold picture frames before moving into dollhouse furniture and launching its first successful toy, a ukulele called "Uke-A-Doodle" in 1947.

Mainline

In 1959, Mattel introduced the iconic Barbie doll, which became their best-selling toy and a cultural phenomenon. Throughout the 1960s, the company expanded with products like Chatty Cathy, Ken, Major Matt Mason, and a series of space-themed dolls and toys.

As many of us know, Mattel also introduced Hot Wheels in the 1960s. On May 18, 1968, the company launched the first line of Hot Wheels cars, famously known as the Sweet Sixteen.

Loose

In the 1980s, Mattel faced financial challenges but managed to turn things around by introducing successful lines like He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and securing a licensing partnership with Disney.

Mattel expanded further through acquisitions, including Fisher-Price in 1993, Tyco Toys in 1997, and Mega Brands in 2014. The company continues to grow by revitalizing popular brands like Monster High, Thomas & Friends, and Masters of the Universe, while introducing new lines and licensed products.
