How to identify Hot Wheels cases

U.S. Card

The Hot Wheels casting is based on the Hirohata Merc. It is a 1950s lead sled, a heavily modified car that has the roof chopped, the body lowered, lights recessed, emblems removed, and other customizations.

It was built in 1953 for "Bob" (Robert Masato) Hirohata by George and Sam Barris, along with Frank Sonzogni.

International Card

George Barris is the legendary customizer whose creations include the Batmobile from the 1966 Batman TV series, the Munster Koach and DRAG-U-LA from The Munsters, the truck from Beverly Hillbillies, and KITT from Nightrider.

The Hirohata Merc began as a 1951 Club Coupe with many customizations taken from other vehicles.

Short Card

It has grille teeth from a 1952 Chevrolet, side trim from a 1952 Buick, hubcaps from a Cadillac, taillights from a 1952 Lincoln Capri, and more.

The original Mercury flathead engine was swapped for a Cadillac engine, earning the car the nickname "Mercillac."

Loose

Originally built for around $3,500 (about $41,000 in 2024 dollars), the iconic Hirohata Merc sold at auction in 2022 for an incredible $1.95 million.
