Pantone began in the 1950s in New Jersey as M & J Levine Advertising, a commercial printing shop run by brothers Mervin and Jesse Levine. In 1962, Lawrence Herbert bought the business and reorganized it as Pantone to focus on standardized color systems.
The Pantone Matching System (PMS) was introduced in 1963 and assigned each color a unique number, allowing designers and printers to match the same shade across different presses, materials, and locations.
PMS is used across graphic design, packaging, fashion, product manufacturing, and interiors. Companies rely on PMS codes to keep logos and products consistent from job to job.
The company also produces guides for fashion, home, and interior design that include over 2,600 colors on cotton, polyester, and nylon. It offers handheld devices like the Pantone Color Match Card, which lets users scan and match real-world colors to Pantone standards.
Pantone became well known for its “Color of the Year” program, launched in 2000. Each year, the company highlights one color it predicts will influence trends in design, fashion, and culture. The latest winner for 2025 is Mocha Mousse (PANTONE 17-1230), "a warming brown hue imbued with richness."
Today, Pantone is a subsidiary of X-Rite, a company specializing in color science and technology. Its PMS system remains the global standard for accurate color communication, ensuring that a designer in one country and a manufacturer in another can reproduce the same shade perfectly.
