2027 Hot Wheels Racing Culture - Mix 1

Hot Wheels Racing Culture is a new premium series featuring race cars from throughout the years. The first mix includes four metal/metal cars with Real Rider wheels and display bases, with the 1991 Mazda RX-7 GTO as a brand-new casting.

  1. 1991 Mazda RX-7 GTO - New Casting
  2. 2008 Audi A4 Touring Car
  3. Subaru Impreza WRX
  4. 2024 Ford Mustang RTR Spec 5-FD

This batch of cars is in mix "A" of assortment JRR32 and ship in 10-count cases. A case should include three each of the 2008 Audi A4 Touring Car and 2024 Ford Mustang RTR Spec 5-FD, and two each of the others.

The Hot Wheels casting is based on the 1991 Mazda RX-7 GTO, a race car built for the IMSA GTO series. Despite looking like an RX-7, the race car has a tube-frame chassis and shares little with the production car.

Power comes from a four-rotor engine producing about 640 horsepower. The engine was developed from the one used in Mazda's 767 race car, which competed at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Pete Halsmer drove the RX-7 GTO to three victories and the 1991 IMSA GTO Drivers' Championship. Teammate Price Cobb added two more wins, and Mazda won the Manufacturers' Championship.

After Mazda ended the RX-7 GTO program in 1991, one of the cars returned to racing in 1994 and competed at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It finished second in its class.

I suspect the display bases have something to do with how the cars are positioned on the cards and making sure 10 cars can fit in a case. I can't say I'm a fan of the sideways packaging, but that just means there's more incentive to rip these open.
