The all-new Hot Wheels casting of the Ferrari GTO is based on the high-performance Ferrari introduced in 1984. Often called the 288 GTO, the car is officially known simply as the GTO, which stands for Gran Turismo Omologato, or Grand Touring Homologated, and it was developed to meet requirements for Group B racing.
Power comes from a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V8 producing 400 horsepower and 366 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mounted longitudinally behind the driver and paired with a five-speed manual transmission, helping the GTO reach 60 mph in about 4.8 seconds and a top speed of around 189 mph.
The GTO used lightweight materials including fiberglass, Kevlar, and carbon fiber to help keep its weight down. Its wider body also features three vertical vents behind each rear wheel, a styling detail inspired by the original 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO.
Ferrari originally planned to build 200 cars to meet homologation requirements, but Group B ended before the GTO could compete. Demand led Ferrari to produce 272 examples between 1984 and 1987, 72 more than originally planned.
Ferrari also developed five more extreme GTO Evoluzione versions of the 288 GTO. Work on those cars later helped lead to the development of the Ferrari F40.
